Supporting Year 7 RE through blogging.

Black History Month

I hope you are all enjoying your half term holiday!

As Black History Month draws to a close, it may be a good time to consider: Do we need a Black History Month? Here are a few of the TrueTube videos that you might want to watch and comment on.

DARCUS HOWE

Do you agree with Darcus Howe?

SYDRC V RAGEH

Do you think that Black History Month is directed at some communities and not others?

REAL STORY NATHALIE EMMANUEL

How important is your heritage to you?

AKALA

Do you agree with Akala? Do you think he makes a good comparison to Chinese history?

Please feel free to leave comments here on these, or any other videos that you watch on TrueTube. At the end of Black History Month, you may want to consider if / how your attitudes have changed.

Homework 1.6

Homework is due on Friday 17 October.

This week, 7BK2 will begin work in connection with Black History Month. We will be learning about the Kick Racism Out of Football campaign. (The weeks of action are 16 – 28 October.)

Your homework? To write a poem inspired by your learning in class. You will be learning what the Bible and the Catholic Church have to say about racism, and you will be learning about what footballers have to say about racism in sport. Be inspired to write a poem encouraging people to “kick racism out”!

I look forward to sharing the best poems here on the blog, and perhaps in the More&More school magazine. Do your best!

Here are some Bible passages that might help you:

Exodus 22:21
Leviticus 19:34
Luke 10:25-37
Acts 2:1-13

Homework 1.5

Homework due on Friday 10 October. (Apologies – the website was down last week, so this homework is late on, and by now all the homework should have been submitted. However, it hasn’t been, so I think it is worthwhile adding here.)

Copy out the Hail Mary, and begin to learn it.

Hail Mary, Full of grace,
The Lord is with you.
Blessed are you among women,
and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mother of God,
Pray for us sinners,
now, and at the hour of our death.
Amen.

Homework 1.4

Homework due on Friday 3 October.

Prepare your speech on your faith community (or another community that you are part of).

Oral Assessment!

Prepare a talk about your community (church, mosque or other community group that you are part of).

Research your faith community, whether it is Christian, Hindu, Muslim, Sikh or Buddhist.

Prepare a one minute speech. You may include pictures, photographs or artefacts to support your speech.

Practice and time your speech at home.

Remember this is an oral assessment, so you will be given a level based on your speech, not on your writing.

You may wish to include some of the following points in your speech:

What does your faith community believes?
What is your place of worship is called?
What do you do in your place of worship/What happens in your place of worship?
What might you find in your place of worship?
Information about an important festival in your faith community.
Information about the different vocations in your community.
What are the important beliefs of your faith community?
Why do you think it is important to belong to a faith community?
What symbols can be found in your place of worship?

You can include any other information that you think is relevant.

7BK2 – Week 3

Homework due in on Friday 19 September.

(Sorry – I was a bit late in putting this on the blog … but because we had a special visitor to the class, I didn’t collect it in, so I will collect it next Friday 26 September.)

Complete the worksheet on What Makes A Good Community.

Describe the actions that made your group work well together.
Describe the actions that meant that your group did not work so well together.
Describe what makes a good community.

7BK2 – Week 2

Homework is due on Thursday 18 September.

Write a TAPS prayer.

This prayer should have four sections.

Thank you – Write a section of a prayer of thanks to God.
Adoration – Write a section with reasons why we could praise God.
Please – Write a section where you might ask God for something for yourself (supplication) or for others (intercession).
Sorry – Write a section where you confess the things you have done wrong that you feel sorry about.

It would be especially good if you could illustrate your prayer.

We could say some of the prayers in class over the next few weeks.

7BK2 Homework 1

Homework due on Thursday 11 September 2008.

Your homework is to produce a title page on the topic of community. You should use words and pictures. The title page should be in colour. You can find examples of work from last year’s Year 7s by clicking on this link here. There is also a short animated presentation featuring many title pages from different year groups here, to give you some more ideas. I look forward to seeing your finished pages on Thursday!

The Learning Objectives for this unit are:

1) What is a community?
2) What is prayer?
3) What is the Mass?
4) What do Catholic Christians believe about the Eucharist?
5) What happens during Mass?
6) What communities do you belong to?

St Francis of Assisi – a clue?

Click on the picture to see a larger image of this Wordle (word cloud). The larger the word, the more it was mentioned on the wiki page giving an outline of the life of St Francis of Assisi. What can you deduce (work out) about St Francis from this Wordle?

6.4 Homework

Homework is due on Monday 30 June.

This week there is a treasure hunt competition. You will receive the handout in class, and you will need to find out a number of facts. Write as many answers as you can on the worksheet, then return on Monday. There will a prize to the person in the class who finds the most correct answers!

1. Where can you find the body of St Thomas More today?

2. Where is his head said to be?

3. Tell someone at home one fact about St Bernadette. Ask them to write it down and sign below:

4. Find someone in school who has visited either Lourdes, Siena or Assisi.

5. State one thing of which St Catherine of Siena is the patron saint.

6. Write down one story related to St Francis of Assisi.

6.3 Homework

If for any reason I do not give you any homework during this final term, then please keep up your research of the saints that we are studying in class. It would also be interesting to find out if you have been named after a saint, or if you were given a saint’s name at your baptism.

Some of the saints you could study are:

St Bernadette
St Catherine of Siena
St Francis of Assisi
St Francis de Sales
St Rita
St Cecilia

Have fun, and I look forward to learning what you have learnt!
